30 Sep From Milan to Melbourne
There are many things one can attain from venturing out to visit one of the worlds ‘Mecca’ for fashion. Inspiration, creative expression, love and a complete wardrobe makeover. And that is just a few. Milan is the epicentre of the worlds most revered fashion houses. It is where the beautiful come to be seen and talked about and where the who’s who of industry elite come to get a look at what is happening in the world of fashion. Where does one begin. There are many local designers that we haven’t even heard of here in Asia pacific that have the most amazing and elegant designs. They are very well established in Italy and around Europe. It is always great to see boutique fashion houses that are unfamiliar to you. It is a way to immerse yourself to not only a new designer but their clothes, fabrics, creative drive and style. There are several in Milan that one can stumble on as they are walking the streets and getting lost in this cultural and dynamic city. Milan has similarities to Melbourne. There are classified as sister cities after all. Melbourne has that European cosmopolitan feel to it. Especially now with the new wave of cafes and bars and Italian millennial’s that have come to work here. This gives it more of a European vibe and way of being. Aperol Spritz has become the drink of the moment with many drinking it regardless of time of day. Melbourne is a fashion mecca however if you had to compare to Milan that is where we would fall short. You simply can’t. Milan is on another level in terms of quality, class, style and how locals and the like dress and conduct themselves.
The Milanese walk the walk. They have an effortless Je ne sais quoi about them. It is a flare that they take in stride. Like they have a know how of how to dress, how to accessorize and how to ooze that confidence. Even as they do something so simple like walk. This is difficult to find in Melbourne. Not all can do that. Pull off that trifecta of style, confidence and quality. It is not all bread into us. In Milan it is. It is part of their being. Like a birthright that they are grown into. That is why it is the worlds hub for style, designers and quality. There is simply nothing like it. You put the fashion element with the lifestyle and vibrancy of the city and you have a place that is nowhere like it in the world. Milan is the city of all cities. There are so many designers that stage runways during Milan fashion week. Several daily infact. The city is a buzz during that week in February and September where many international people descend to the Milan for one of the most important times in the city’s social calendar. High end clientele, international models and A list stars walk amongst it all. Wouldn’t it be nice if Melbourne had that caliber of clout. Melbourne could get to that level if it wanted to. But we must acknowledge that there are factors that may contribute to it not getting to that level. Firstly its a culture thing. Fashion isn’t for everyone. In Milan it is. Commerce and the way people spend and shop, the quality and culture of garments and how it goes from designer to production and in to the stores. It all plays a part. Some things would need to change if we were to be anything like Milan. In the mean time lets enjoy Melbourne for being our fashion hub and destination to shop. Who knows. With some cleaver thinking we could turn things around and start being that place that’s on the map as being a mecca for style and fashion.
